Since the creation of a modest, like-minded, group in Toronto in 1868 Canadians have recorded their astronomical imagery through art.
Elements of a shared vision of the optically reachable universe can be observed in the images of this exhibit. The viewer can explore individual pursuits of particular phenomena, and the cultivation of different technical means of representation. This exhibit, Science and Art: 150 Year of Astronomical Imagery, takes you on a journey through space and time.
Time as a shaping element in our relationship to the universe, plays several roles in this exhibit. The finite speed of light temporally determines the appearance of the objects in the sky and many of the objects may have under gone radical changes unseen by either artist or viewer while other objects may simply have ceased to exist. Time on a different scale, is witnessed by the changes in the style and means of representation of the celestial objects over the past century and a half. Images on exhibit will explore the appearances of the universe. Through sketches, painting and photography these artists practice a wide tradition of fidelity to the appearance of phenomena in the sky. The “Scientific Eye” can produce works of aesthetic appeal, which have the power to raise unsettling reflections on what we can and cannot know about what we observe. Imaging vast objects across astronomical reaches of time and space somehow humanized the endeavour of representing the cosmos.

Featured astronomical photographer Jeff Dawkins explains in his show, Landscapes and Night Sky Photography, “Capturing images from unusual & diverse locations, or that show the world in a way that is difficult to see with the naked eye is something I enjoy. Astrophotography and night sky landscapes are a big part of this for me. Advancements in equipment and processing techniques help to bring out details & create compositions to accomplish this, and I hope you will enjoy my work in this area”.
